Here is what we have learned from reading company press releases, the Vidanta Traveler magazine, sites like themeparx.com, aimfair.com as well as from our visits to the resorts.
The new 830-acre theme park resort project in Nuevo Vallarta that Vidanta now calls “The Parks” has been in the works for several years. During that time there has been much speculation about its design as Vidanta had kept the details very “close to the vest”. Initially Vidanta had alluded to it being similar in many respects to Walt Disney World Resort but that the park would have an overall Cirque du Soleil theme and would be filled with many immersive experiences for its visitors.
Vidanta recently reported in late 2019 that The Parks project “has expanded greatly in scope, shifting from a single theme park to a multi-tiered destination of immersive entertainment and vacation experiences across several park concepts, spanning hundreds of acres and countless one-of-a-kind experiences” but only one of these park concepts will be dedicated to the Cirque du Soleil brand. These park concepts are to be opened in phases, with the first phase being the opening of “Vidanta World” currently planned for the Winter of 2020. Many believe it will be a challenge to meet this deadline, but recent press releases show considerable progress being made in the way of big-ticket amusement park and gondola ride expenditures by Vidanta, which is encouraging. The Cirque du Soleil themed park will be home to a new “water-themed” Cirque show and dinner experience, which will be housed in a new world-class theater holding up to 600 guests per show. This show is currently set to open in 2021. In addition to the new show, multiple acrobatic and artistic attractions will be integrated in the Cirque du Soleil area, immersing guests in the world of Cirque du Soleil, and bringing outdoor animations to life.
The Parks will undoubtedly have many things in common with parks like Walt Disney World Resort, namely, it would offer multiple “in-park” resort hotels, many exciting amusement park rides, a variety of dining and entertainment options, and some familiar Disneyesque ticket add-ons like early admission and “fast pass” options. And since Vidanta says they now have Disney’s former master planner, Wing Chao, working on The Parks design, it will surely take on many of the best design features of Disney, but it sounds like we should expect a whole lot more. Vidanta’s stated vision for The Parks has consistently gone well beyond what one would consider the classic Disney experience. The sheer size of the project alone now sets it apart – over 830 acres! The descriptors that keep popping up in the news reports is that the Parks will be filled with “immersive” and “experiential” entertainment, not just the typical thrilling amusement park rides, “all planned, designed, and executed by the most accomplished experts in the field”. Vidanta says it will be “culture-shifting” and will “fuse luxury with imagination, creating a fantastical world where adventures leap to life." We can’t wait to see this project unfold!
There are to be three different hotels built inside The Parks: Kingdom of the Sun, The Cascades, and Celebrate Park. Vidanta has been selling lodging contracts for units to be located in each of these in park hotels over the last several years. From what I have seen, in general, the “in-park” accommodations will be somewhat smaller and more compact than what guests would experience in a Grand Luxxe unit of the same occupancy limit.
