When visiting these magnificent properties and basking in the comforts of their 5 star service, people often times will consider becoming a member so that they can travel whenever and as often as they like and experience everything these resorts have to offer their members. We are frequently contacted by guests in the middle of a sales presentation or guests simply considering a purchase who are asking “What is the best way to become a member?” From our 18 years of experience with owning, renting, and upgrading with Vidanta several times, and from talking with other members, our advice is:
You will NEVER make money or even recoup your investment in these contracts no matter what you do. Not through renting and not through resale. Period. This is an investment in your family’s vacation memories. That is all. And believe me, we have received a tremendous amount of enjoyment from our Grand Luxxe vacations and have made so many wonderful memories. One sales pitch you will hear is that your investment in this contract will appreciate in value over time. There is plenty of evidence out there to indicate this is not true. Just talk to experts in the business of timeshare contract resales or visit websites where thousands of these contracts are being marketed for substantially less than what the member has paid. This has always been true for 99% of all timeshares out there and Vidanta is no different. It has been a bitter pill to swallow, but we’ve accepted it and moved on. However, we would like others to benefit from our experience.
As we mentioned above, there are a lot of members wanting to sell their contracts for various reasons. Due to a cancer diagnosis in 2020, Randy’s compromised immune system has severely limited his ability to travel internationally so we are now ready to sell our contracts and our website as well. Changes in vacation preferences, financial constraints, age related issues, and family commitments are also among the many reasons members may need to sell. In any case, the price you will pay on the resale market for these contracts is substantially less than what you will pay with Vida Vacations. The main reason for this is because on a typical timeshare sale from a developer like Vidanta, the marketing costs built into the price of these contracts is usually around 50% of the total purchase price, therefore, the moment you walk out the door, the value of your contract on the open market is only 50% of what you paid for it.
So, if you’ve definitely decided you would like to become a member, do your research to determine exactly what Vidanta unit you want as well as what rights and benefits you want to have attached to your contract, such as Park benefits, at least 12-month reservation window, Platinum member benefits, etc. In particular, you should definitely look for some VERY desirable flexibility and savings perks that Vidanta stopped offering years ago such as (1) no mandatory usage (maintenance) fees so you pay only when you reserve a unit, 2) ability to vacation at any one of Vidanta’s resorts throughout Mexico, not just one, (3) the ability to trade down and reserve different units at any of Vidanta’s hotels (Grand Luxxe, Grand Bliss, Grand Mayan, etc.) (4) generous spa and golf benefits, etc. (5) substantial savings on usage fees when booking multiple units, etc. and (6) 30 day cancellation window vs. 90, etc. If you can acquire these benefits from the purchase of an existing contract, you will be able to carry these forward to future upgrades you might make. And finally, it is important to discuss transferability. Standard contracts include language that severely limit the member’s ability to transfer their current rights and benefits to a third party. For example, if a member owned one registered week (10 year term) and 2 residence weeks (100 year term), the standard contract would state that only the registered week will transfer, and it will also strip away virtually all benefits granted through contract addendums, leaving the member with nothing of significant value if they want to sell it. So, it is essential that you verify that the member has been granted in writing from Vida Vacations the right to transfer all rights and benefits you are wanting to buy.
Regardless of what they might tell you when you are visiting, the sales presentation is a very high-pressure experience that will take at least half of your day (we’ve actually been stuck in there for 10 hours). And unfortunately, it frequently ends badly, thus negatively impacting the guests’ overall vacation experience. There are countless guest reviews on various vacation related websites documenting this. Their resorts are spectacular. Their sales process is not.
The second most commonly used sales pitch is that you can make a lot of money renting any unused weeks. We have built a great website and developed a long list of clientele but even for us, renting weeks is a lot of work and is challenging because there is a lot of competition. So, our advice is don’t buy anything more that you and your family will realistically use.
